Maine Potato Pot Pie Contest - Rules
Saturday, AUGUST 2nd @ 2:00PM
Agricultural Exhibition Hall
Entries due 1:30pm - 1:45pm

Celebrate Maine's rich agricultural heritage! Bring your best savory pot pit featuring Maine Potatoes as the undeniable star ingredient. Whether it is a traditional family recipe, a meat lover's dream, or a hearty root vegetable creation, we want to taste it!


CONTEST RULES & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Eligibility: Open to amateur home bakers only. No commercial bakeries or professional chefs.

    2.  Age Divisions:

  • Junior Division: Ages 17 & Under
  • Adult Division: Ages 18 & Older

    3.  The Potato Rule: Maine potatoes MUST be the primary ingredient by volume or weight in your pie filling.

    4.  Crust Types: You may use a traditional pastry crust, puff pastry, or a mashed potato crust (Shepherd's pie style). All crusts
         must be homemade from scratch.

    5.  CRITICAL TEMPERATURE & SAFETY RULES:

  • The fairgrounds does not have ovens, stovetops, or hot plates.
  • All pies must be delivered fully cooked, hot, and packed in an insulated thermal carrier, thermal wrap, or heavily wrapped towels.
  • Temperature Check: Every pie will be tested with a digital food thermometer immediately at check-in (between 1:30pm & 1:45pm). Any pie containing meat, poultry, or seafood that registers below 140owill be disqualified for food safety reasons. Keep your carrier zipped until a volunteer checks you in!

    6.  Anonymity: To ensure fairness, do not put your name on your pie plate. The check-in committee will assign an anonymous
         entry number to your pie.

    7.  2:00 PM: Judging Begins! (Spectators are welcome to watch the judging panel.)

    8.  Results: Winners will be announced immediately following the completion of judging.


JUDGING CRITERIA

Pies will be scored our of 100 total points based on the following breakdown:

  • Appearance & Presentation (20 Points): Visual appeal, golden crust, and creative design.
  • Crust Quality (20 Points): Flaky pastry texture or perfectly browned mashed potatoes topping. No soggy bottoms!
  • Filling & Ingredient Focus (30 Points): Making Maine Potatoes the star, with a great balance of flavors, herbs, and textures.
  • Flavor & Taste (30 Points): Overall deliciousness, memory factor, and balanced seasoning.
